Christmas will be exactly 7 months since my last post – and for those who have settled back into wine coolers and pale ales I’m sorry. Let me explain.
It’s not even my fault really, it’s this guy’s fault. His name is Dr. T. Colin Campbell and he wrote a book (that I read) all about diet and nutrition. Dr. Campbell and his cohorts advocate for a diet that eliminates the animal protein casein that’s found in all meat and dairy. But this isn’t some mindless rant or hippy propaganda; it’s backed by the most expansive nutrition study ever done – and the data is compelling.
So we tried it. Slow but surely my wife and I replaced one meal a week until we were eating an entirely plant based diet – and if you’re wondering we felt great. Sharp, alert, and better rested. But a funny thing happened.
I completely lost the taste for alcohol.
And I mean totally. The very thought of it was off-putting. While my liver thanked me I was sad to lose this part of my life (don’t worry mom, I’m not a drunk) since I very much enjoy the exploratory aspects of mixology. The “what if we make a tobacco and snickers cocktail” that inevitably ends in “YUCK!”. If you can believe it, I missed that.
A Serious Time (& Money) Commitment.
The blog just kinda sat after that. It may not look like it but each post takes several hours to pull together. Finding the a recipe to share. Making multiple versions of it prior to shooting to improve it or make it my own. Shoot it for the camera – which takes way longer than I care to admit. Edit & color it in photoshop. Write the story that drives the post…. you get the idea.
Not to mention the money piece. Seeing as I haven’t figured out how to make a buck from this project short of plastering campy ads all over it I’m bankrolling it myself. Which is not cheap.
All that and the stomach turning thought of booze was way too much. Soon my bar studio became cluttered with projects and the bottles sat collecting dust.
BUT NO MORE!
Recently, we’re started slowly introducing meat back into our diets – and wouldn’t you know it that my taste for booze returned. Like instantly. Seriously, it’s weird. That’s the big reason.
Another surprising reason that I’ve decided to rekindle the blog involved a recent trip to Google Analytics. Imagine my surprise when, with no activity in over six months, my readership had grown? Weird. Cool. Thank you.
So here we are. I’m back and ready to give it another go. I had a blast last time and I’m hoping to revamp to even higher heights.
A few of the things in store – I’m thinking about starting a podcast all about boozy culture. I’ve got a private tour of Woodford Reserve Distillery lined up in a few weeks – which is cool. Dinner with the winner of 2014’s World Class (global mixology competition) aka world’s best bartender… so stay tuned.
