If you haven’t seen a liquid marijuana on a menu yet you surely will in the next few years. As Marijuana becomes increasingly decriminalized in the United States tastemakers are already finding new and creative ways to work the forbidden herb into culinary exploits. This is my attempt.
- 45 ml (1.5 oz) Marijuana Leaf Gin
- 7.5 ml (1/4 oz) Absinthe
- 15 ml (1/2 oz) Feni Cashew Brandy
- 15 ml (1/2 oz) Simple Syrup
- 2 Dashes Orange flower water (optional)
- Add all ingredients into a mixing glass.
- Stir with cold hard ice until chilled.
- Fine strain into a coupe.
- Garnish with a large marijuana leaf.
- Enjoy responsibly
Brewing Green Dragon
Green Dragon is the common name given to weed infused alcohol. Typically the process involves cooking the marijuana to activate the psychoactive compounds, steeping the herb in high proof alcohol, heating again, and then storing for future use (source).
With my college days behind me (and strong aversion to mixing intoxicating chemicals) I knew I’d need to find another method.
After quite bit of research I stumbled upon a woman in florida who made an herbal tea from the leaves of the plant without heat – thus eliminating the psychoactives – and knew that leaves steeped in gin would be my base.
Also, being that where I live I don’t have access to marijuana leaves (yet, laws are a-changin’) I decided to improvise with some of the herbs that I did have laying around. Mint, lemon balm, sage, thyme, green tea, matcha, angelica root all were fair game in an attempt to emulate the vibes of marijuana flavor.
The liquid marijuana gin had a very dirty, earthy, vegetal taste to it – and I mean that it be the best way possible. There were strong flavors of matcha and notes of fresh cut grass on the nose. It was pretty good. That said, I don’t know that I’d order a tall glass on the rocks or drink it straight but as a base it’s certainly quite palatable.
Mixing up a Marijuana cocktail
I started with 45 ml (1.5 oz) of marijuana leaf infused gin in a glass. Then I added 7.5 ml (1/4 oz) of absinthe and a 15 ml (1/2 oz) of Feni cashew brandy. All goes into a mixing glass with simple syrup to taste – I used 15 ml (1/2 oz).
Sir with hard, clear ice in a mixing glass and then strain – and double strain to remove any remaining plant matter – into your glass.
I don’t know if this cocktail needs a garnish or not but since I couldn’t get my hands on any leaves I ended up buying a plastic marijuana lei and cutting off one of the leaves.
Strong savory drink with heavy earthiness. Happy 420.
